I did this illustration for the Library Journal in August for the September issue. It was actually a bit of an adventure into the old school techniques that I hadn't used in ages. I almost always draw my final line art on paper with pen and ink but over the last several years I've been doing all of sketches digitally. It's way easier and faster to revise digital sketches than paper ones. This time that was not an option. I traveling with the intent of being on "vacation" so I left my laptop at home. I was crashing at a friends house in L.A. getting ready to exhibit at the Longbeach Zine Fest. It was a good job and I didn't want to pass on it- so I always carry a good drawing kit with me. I broke out the pencils and went to work on a dining room table. I used my phone to snap photos to send to the art director. After the zine fest it was off the Las Vegas for a friends birthday and goodbye to a vast dining room table to the worlds smallest hotel vanity desk in which I finished the sketches. I did a lot of sketches for this job. somewhere around 15!. I think because I was traveling and balancing work with fun, I just wasn't getting the concept. The other hard part was I'd only have 2 days to do the final when I got back to Hawaii. Well, it got done, not ideally but life is often not ideal.

Hilo Jungle Kitties

In between pages of KITTENS #3, I've been practicing my watercolors. I'm still pretty rusty but it's been a lot of fun. This one is inspired by the Monstero plants that grow all over the east side of the Big Island. I'll be doing more of these!

Hilo Jungle Kitty

It's been awhile since I've watercolored anything. I'm definitely a bit rusty. I'm planning to do a series of small paintings inspired by new Hawaiian home to hone my skills and explore this lush, beautiful place. I had forgotten some basic techniques as I progressed through this painting, I think mainly due to making so many silkscreens prints which is a completely different process. Well, either way, this was fun. Stay tuned for more!

MoCCA 2017

Back in New York city for the MoCCA Festival and it's great to be back... except that it's cold, mind you not New York City cold- not the evil cold that seeps through any jacket, any parka, gloves, or hat, making you question whether you're going to make it back to your apartment cold. Just normal NYC cold which after living in Hawaii for the last eight months might as well be Arctic circle cold.

The MoCCA Arts Festival will take place April 1 - 2nd from 11:00AM - 6:00PM at the luxurious and modern Metropolitan West located on West 46th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues. Tickets will be $5 at the door.

I'll be at table G 231, G 232 with my old studiomates Anuj Shrestha and Jen Tong. Come check us out!

I'm debuting a brand spanking new silkscreen print for the occasion!
