Kikakapu Print

Another Print mock-ip from my "Fish I see while snorkeling" series. This is a companion piece for my Humuhumunukunuku-apua-a. print I did earlier. If you match this on it's right side with that piece the patterns match up.

These guys are a pretty common sight while snorkeling here in Hawaii."Kikakapu" is it's Hawaiian name. It's common name is the Threadfin Butterfly Fish.

TeePublic Shop is Live and Kicking

I've had my stuff on Tee-Public for awhile now. I mainly used it as an outlet for people who wanted my work on T-shirts that I don't personally have in stock. I've now invested time and effort in improving my presence on the site. There are now a ton of my images available to purchase on t-hirts, pillows, phone cases, laptop cases, mugs, and coffee cups.

You can find all that stuff on the link below:

Motor scooting' SURF CHIPMUNKS!

Another colored version of the surf screenprint series I've been working on. This is intended to be a four color silkscreen print. I don't do a lot of four color prints because the more colors you have you increase the likelihood of missed registration which leads me to be grumpy. That said I played with less colors on these two rad rodents and it didn't feel right, so FOUR colors it is!

Thank you Aya Kakeda for translating for me once again!

New Postcard

It was about time I made a new postcard. I've been using the same postcard for promotions and as my business card for the last five years. It was very popular but I've also made a lot of new work since then. So, introducing the Surf Kitty & Pups Postcard! I just placed my order at MOO printing so they'll also be fancy.

I've also made a business card. I find designing them a pain, such a small surface that I often go overboard and it looks like a design mess. Not this time. Kept it graphic and simple.

Above the text is the front of the card and below is the back

Surf Dogs Line Up II

After I created my first "Surf Dogs Line Up", I thought to myself- "Hmmm, I actually haven't drawn a lot of dogs before". The first piece was ok, not my best drawing but good enough.

Then I thought "What would bring a real impact to these pups".

Draw a hundred of them.

Then combine them into one single image. 100 surf dogs.

So, now there are seven more. Only eighty seven left.

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a Colored

Fish I see snorkeling #2 colored.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do this. Digital print? Screen print? I've set it up for a silk screen but I'm not sure. I really liked using the dot screens, they brought a cool graphic element to the piece.

Nene Beach Holiday!

A fun day at the beach with the native Hawaiian Geese- the NENE. Yep, they look like Canadian geese and rightfully so, they descended from Canadian geese that came to island chain about five hundred thousand years and decided to stick around. There smaller than the standard Canadian goose and some are flightless. It was almost driven to extinction but due to conservation efforts they are on the rebound.
This is a mock-up for a four color silkscreen print.

Surf Maneki Neko

Are you feeling lucky? This cat is! I'm pretty sure that I'm going to screenprint this but I'm also considering making stickers or t-shirts. I've considered putting in more Japanese type but I think this is good enough for now.

BJ Penn Vs my Boxing Chicken

I'll be the first to admit that I know next to nothing about MMA fighting but since moving to Hawaii it's hard not to know who BJ Penn is. Here he is posing with my friend Jess at the Exhibit Gallery in Downtown Hilo holding my "Boxing Chicken" screen print!

Humuhumunukunukuapua a

Pen and ink work for my next "Fish I see while Snorkeling" print series. This the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. Say that three times fast or even once for that matter. It's the State fish of Hawaii and is known as the Reef Triggerfish in English. These guys can be really colorful, but I think I'm going to screen print this image I'll either get creative with transparent separations or limit the amount of colors I use. I'll post the color mock-up as soon as it's ready.

Surf Chipmunks!

Here are the inks for the latest print in the surf series I'm working on. I'll be working up the screen print separations tomorrow. I'm think this may be a three color print. I might put some text along with it. There are no chipmunks on the islands as far as I know but drawing chipmunks is so much fun.

Hawaiian Idol

I've been trying to identify and memorize the local reef fish for when I go snorkeling and was having a terrible time at it. Sure, I could buy a guide book, but what's the fun in that. So, I started taking pictures of them with my GoPro and then taking to the inter webs to figure out what they were. I figured if I drew them too, that would come as close as possible to permanently installing them in my noggin.

This fish is a Moorish Idol. They're a pretty common site when I go snorkeling and a pretty, weird fish.

Puppies in the Line Up

Surf Puppy Line Up.

I've been working on a series of surf related pieces for a show in October here in Hilo.  I also want to build up a portfolio for local galleries. It's been fun and challenging. I'm trying to create cool surf art without rehashing worn out tropes or to use those tropes in a fun new way.
I'm not sure if I'll be silkscreening these guys or not. Right now, they could be adapted pretty easily.

Surf Cat is Hungry!

I'm prepping to move into a new studio soon here in Hilo! To celebrate I drew up a Surf Cat! He's a bit sad with an empty bowl, but he's carving it up.
